What type of health conditions can be treated by an ND?
As primary health care practitioners, naturopathic doctors treat the full spectrum of medical conditions, from acute and chronic conditions, to pediatric and geriatric, physical and psychological. Many patients rely on NDs as their family doctor. If an ND is unable to treat your condition, he/she will refer you appropriately to someone who can.
Is Naturopathy the same as Homeopathy?
Homeopathic medicine is one of the therapies that naturopathic doctors may integrate into a comprehensive treatment program. Homeopathy was developed in Germany in the 1700s and is based on the principle of “like cures like” using minute amounts of natural substances to stimulate the body’s self-healing abilities. Naturopathic doctors are trained in homeopathy and other natural medicine modalities as part of their educational program.
Is naturopathic medicine covered by insurance?
Most extended health care plans have naturopathic coverage. Contact your employer or insurance agent to inquire about the particular details of your plan. Cornwall Naturopathic Clinic will work cooperatively with you to ensure you receive the maximum health benefit from your plan. Naturopathic doctors are NOT currently covered under OHIP.
Is naturopathic medicine backed by scientific research and evidence?
Natural medicine is supported by strong evidence based research. Clinical nutrition is backed up by clinical trials and the link between diet, stress, and disease is well documented in scientific journals. Botanical medicine also has a long history of traditional use that is supported by current medical research. The evidence supporting natural therapies continues to grow and there are many journals of naturopathic research.
What should I expect as a new patient at Cornwall Naturopathic Clinic?
Prior to your first visit, you should complete an Initial Intake Form and bring it with you to your first appointment. In addition to your intake form, please bring the actual bottles of any medication or supplement that you are taking, and if possible, a copy of your most recent blood work and any other relevant health records. Your first visit will last 90 minutes and involves a thorough health history. During this time your main health concerns, health history and medical records will be carefully discussed and reviewed. A physical exam will also be conducted. If necessary, further testing such as laboratory tests and/or specialized diagnostic tests may be requested. This can be completed at the clinic. Some recommendations as a starting point for your treatment plan will be made on the first visit.
The first follow up visit is 45 minutes and all other follow up visits are 30 minutes. The number and frequency of follow-up visits will depend largely on the severity and duration of your condition(s), the pace of your progress and the type of therapy you are using. The physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and spiritual aspects of your health are included to create a personalized treatment plan.
If I already have a family doctor, can I still become a patient at Cornwall Naturopathic Clinic?
Yes! Naturopathic doctors work together with other health care services including your medical doctor. We cooperate and refer to other health practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate. Naturopathic doctors strive to integrate health services.
If I am taking medications, can I still receive naturopathic treatment?
Naturopathic doctors are trained to understand the effects of prescription medications and the interactions between medications and natural therapies. As such, naturopathic doctors can safely prescribe natural treatments that will work to enhance the effectiveness, reduce the side effects and rebalance any deficiency from your prescription medications.
